Apple Inc. T -1.79% said customers placed more than 2 million pre-orders for the iPhone 5 on the first day it was available, doubling previous results and exceeding initial supply of the smartphone.
"The customer response to iPhone 5 has been phenomenal," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of world-wide marketing, in a news release Monday.
The Cupertino, Calif., company said that while the majority of pre-orders will be delivered to customers on Friday—when the phone becomes available in stores—many are scheduled to arrive in October.
"Clearly, the iPhone 5 is off to a very strong start," Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White said, adding the figure "handily beat" the firm's estimate of between 1.3 million and 1.5 million pre-orders.

Flat map not working as expected

Apple CEO Tim Cook took the most drastic step yet to address the growing furor over the company's beleaguered map application, saying he was "extremely sorry" for the frustration felt by customers and vowing to improve the program. "With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment," Cook said in a statement, which was first reported on by TechCrunch. An apology from Apple is a rare thing, but the company has said sorry from time to time, including the "Antennagate" troubles two years ago with the iPhone 4. This time again, Apple has been forced to confront a problem publicly. The maps flap has allowed competitors such as Motorola Mobility take a swipe at the smartphone giant, and left it vulnerable to criticism.

iPhone 5 review

iPhone 5 review
The new iPhone is here – but is Apple in danger of delivering too little with its latest upgrade?

The excitement of the rumor mill, the titillation of every leaked photo led to higher than ever levels of expectation for the iPhone 5, and while the announcement was greeted with some derision at the lack of perceived headline improvements, the record sales tell an entirely different story.

Given the underwhelming changes to the iPhone 4S, the iPhone 5 really needs to re-energize customers to prove Apple can repeat the game-changing trick it managed with the iPhone 4.

So is the Apple iPhone 5 the greatest smartphone ever, one that will finally see Apple ascend to the top spot in our 20 best mobile phones chart? Or is it a case of too little, too late?

The history of the iPhone line

The history of the iPhone line of phones began with Steve Jobs' direction that Apple Inc. engineers investigate touchscreens. At the time he had been considering having Apple work on tablet PCs, which later came to fruition with the iPad. Many have noted the device's similarities to Apple's previous touch-screen portable device, the Newton MessagePad. Like the Newton, the iPhone is nearly all screen. Its form factor is credited to Apple's head of design, Jonathan Ive.
